Layer Mask won't release

I'm having a problem that may just be a bug...

I've created annotation masks that I used in a map document. I am also creating a map from the same document that does not use that annotation. But I cannot get ArcMap to release that mask on the affected layers. Even when I remove the annotation and the mask feature classes from the document, the masked line work still will not draw.

Am I missing something? I've unchecked everything in the Advanced Drawing options, and even removed the mask layers.

Did you ever resolve this problem?

We are experiencing the same problem where polygons that are used to mask an area continue to mask even when they are not part of a definition query and even if the feature class is removed from ArcMap session all-together. The only way we have found to clear the mask from ArcMap is start with new, blank ArcMap session.

No, it was never resolved. I did the same thing as you did by starting a new map document. It should probably be reported as a bug, but I didn't bother taking the time to do that.
