Annotation feature class Reference Scale

Hi,

We have a number of annotation feature classes, with reference scale set.

I would like to remove the reference scale completely.

Alternatively modify the reference sale to see which would be most appropriate for our app.

I can't find a way to do either as the Change Reference Scale option is always greyed out in ArcCatalog.

I am using ArcGIS 10.3.1 Desktop, ArcGIS 10 Geodatabase. The annotation feature class

is in a versioned dataset.

Has anyone been able to remove or alter the reference scale?
