topic Modify script for convert labels to annotation to add a warning in Developers Questions

I want to know if there's a way to modify the script in ArcMap Desktop for converting labels to annotation so that before it converts, it runs a check to see if a certain layer is on, and if the layer is on it either turns it off or gives me a warning that it's on and lets me turn it off then retry converting to annotation. There's a certain layer I use in all of my maps that causes arcMap to crash if it's on when I try to convert another layer's labels to annotation. I know I should just remember to turn it off, but I forget pretty often and end up causing it to crash several times a day. I know some python and some java, but not enough to know how to write something like this. This is my first time asking a question, so let me know if you need more info or anything, or if I've posted in the wrong group or something. arc map 10.5# arcdesktop scripting* convert labels to annotation
