idea Online Developer Virtual Machines in Developers Ideas

We are reviewing how to improve our development process.

We have long had a 3 tier environment, with a dev/test/prod setup.

DEV environment is not guaranteed, but also we end up stepping on one another too much.

So if we buy Developer Bundles, the labor for install, configure, and license is an incredibly time consuming endeavor. Let’s say we have 5 - it’s a lot of labor taken from the 5 developers who may not be good system’s admins, and it’s a lot for a company with a single system admin to add to their plate.

The MISSING idea - burn it down and start over quickly! Has it ever been considered to have an Azure or other VM setup - perhaps Citrix? The other idea is that I can’t get 5 “server” VMs with a golden image to wad up and throw away, can’t get that kind of time from my internal infrastructure team.

Developers and admins need to have quick opportunities to switch Windows Server version, ArcGIS Version, start over after a mistake is made, and just to overall simplify the license deployment part of a Developer (traditional subscription) Bundle which is not easier to manage, the ROI on a rented VM for quick turn around may be worth a bit of an elevated Developer Bundle price. It’d be even better if we could get a Bucket for 5 users that can be any 5 users, chosen at will by an admin in MyESRI, for quick turn around if actors change, but work assignments must be resumed. And no troubleshooting a problem, a quick way to start over when we get stuck and want to abandon the thought. I would say that $5,500 is easier to swallow if it wasn’t such a manual effort to manage. A time savings component is becoming necessary for many companies, I assume.

I know you have a similar set of “images” for your internal support staff.
