Extremely Slow Spatial Join

I have a shapefile with about 35,000 properties and another with all of the census blocks in Kentucky and Indiana and need to find the census block each property is located in. When I start the join process, it locates the census block for the first 7,000 or so very quickly and then slows to about 30 features per minute. I am using version 10.1 and don't recall having this problem (not to this extent) when using 10.0. Any suggestions as to what I could do to fix this or ideas as to what may be the cause?

Hi Stephen,

Late response here, and I don't know if this will help, but you mention you are using shapefiles. It is good idea to migrate your work to file geodatabase feature classes for this, and future, processing. I am not sure it will help with this issue but it is very likely to save you a hassle in the future.
