how do i import cad (dwg) to gis

we had an outside contractor working on our maps and we are in the process of bring it in house. The contractor was using auto cad and he sent me dwg files. the Superintendent wants to see if everything can be converted into something that we can use with ArcGIS. first I created a new base map and used the correct spatial plan. Then I tired to make a folder connections to my dwg files but they are not showing up in my connection folders. I know this is very big question. But ive got all the data I need I just cant get it to converted and added so that I can pick up where the other person left off.
