Historical Geocoding/Address Locator Question

Hi,

*It has been some time since I've had to work with geocoding addresses, so I apologize if the answer to this is obvious, I'm quite rusty*

Basically, I've developed an address locator for Washington, D.C. in 1860. For the reference data, I've painstakingly coded each line segment to correspond to left/right start/end addresses, according to a number of historical sources.

However (and here is where I think I might have made a mistake), rather than digitizing all of the centerlines from scratch, initially I had borrowed the polyline shapefile from a user who already had digitized the centerlines for street labeling purposes on the same project. I didn't know it at the time I began, but it appears this user had drawn many of the streets in the wrong direction/orientation... that is, the origin point for the line segment started at the wrong end, or what would be the "highest" address number. I subsequently edited this polyline file and flipped all of the line segments so that their origin points corresponded to the proper start locations. I figured ArcGIS would geocode addresses based on my edits.

Instead, ArcGIS seems to be locating addresses based upon only the original orientation of the line segments. For example, even though the line orientation appears as left to right, it will geocode addresses in ascending order from right to left. If all the streets were backward, I'd just flip the locator to look at the "fromaddress" as if it were the "toaddress," and so on, but the problem is that there is a mix of correct and incorrect geocoding. Basically, it seems that anywhere the previous guy drew the line in the wrong direction, I'm getting backward results. Is there any way I can get it to locate these addresses properly? Or, do I have to redraw the whole grid?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help,

Rob

Are you sure you flipped the lines? Have you verified the edits were saved? Any chance you can post a subset of your streets? And some of your addresses you need matched? Sounds like an interesting project; I would be happy to provide an extra set of eyes. That may be all you need.
