    <description>&lt;HTML&gt;&lt;HEAD&gt;&lt;/HEAD&gt;&lt;BODY&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Well I think I figured it out... when I tried re-adding the Excel sheet, the Add Data dialog displayed it as Commercial-Active$' (that is, with a trailing quote mark). Removing the hyphen also got rid of the quote mark, and then everything played nicely.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Another mysterious ArcGIS workflow...&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/BODY&gt;&lt;/HTML&gt;</description>

      <description>&lt;HTML&gt;&lt;HEAD&gt;&lt;/HEAD&gt;&lt;BODY&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Hi all,&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;I'm using the Field Calculator with some basic Python syntax to recalculate a field. The new data is coming from a joined Excel worksheet. My expression is:&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;PRE class="plain" name="code"&gt;!'Commercial-Active$'.OLD![:-3]&lt;/PRE&gt;&lt;DIV style="display:none;"&gt; &lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;When I run this I get the error: "A field name was not found or there were unbalanced quotation marks." I know the field name is correct because I'm selecting it as-is from the Fields box. Does anyone know what this is all about?&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Thanks!&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/BODY&gt;&lt;/HTML&gt;</description>
