How do you automatically timestamp new and edited records in an SDE feature class?

I would like to make it so that as a feature class is edited the "modifiedDate" and "user" fields will be updated automatically. Is there a way to do this?

Hi there,

These ArcScripts might be helpful:

1. EditorID 1.8.2 - Allows you to track who edits the features in your geodatabase, and at what time they were last edited.

2. Editor Tracking - This ArcMap extension enables feature classes and tables to track user edits at the feature/record level.

So do I. I don't understand why this tool is still not integrated with arcgis using SDE geodatabases. Please is any tool/script available to do the same for 10, that will help me a lot.

you can create a class extension in 10 (10.1 has included this functionality) .
Here you can see Timestamper class extension

1) compile this solution with vs2010.
2) Register dll with esriregasm
3) open arccatalog and create a feature class
4) select type class 'TimeStamper class'
5) select type of feature class (polygon, point ect)
7) add your fields of feature class
6) in feature class you have a new tab (Timestamp Settings) where you can set field created, filed updated and field user (you can also set 'not used')

For local geodatabases, user is the username as known by the operating system (in a domain\username format). For remote geodatabases, the IDatabaseConnectionInfo interface is utilized.

I just enable editor tracking in the feature class, I noticed that in the LAST_EDITED_DATE field, the current time is incorrect (the date is correct though). Did any of you have the same experience? Thanks!

Yes, we're in the Eastern time, but it records the Pacific time. Also when I query the current timestamp from the oracle database, it shows the correct timestamp. Thanks!

Do you have the TZ environment variable set explicitly on both the Windows Desktop
host and the database server? Without an explicit TZ, there's a great deal of room
for interpretation.

This is complicated enough that you really need to research it yourself to be sure you know
what happens is what you want to hapen. A google on "tz oracle variable" will get you started.
If you were using Direct Connect I doubt this would be an issue.

Message when enabling editor tracking clearly states that dates are stored in UTC (as they should be!)

You can use it for SDE databases, my organization does.
