Plotting points in a grid

I have very limited ArcGIS experience, but am looking for a way to plot locations across many US states and then lay a grid over the top, with the ability to consider each cell individually. I know of the fishnet, but is there a way to create physical boundaries/labels for each cell in a grid to then attach a list of locations to? The fishnet only labels the lines, not the cells.

Open up ArcGIS desktop help and perfrom a search on ' create polygons from lines'. There is a tutorial that takes you step by step on how to do it.

It's also availiable on line at this link for 9.x.

There is also a tool called 'FEATURE TO POLYGON' that will convert your lines into polygons.

So I found that the Grid Index Features allows me to make the grid with ease. I now can create any size grid I like. If I then plot points on that grid (using lat/long) is there an efficient way to tie the Cell Lable (A4, for example) to each point that falls in that cell?

Extract Values by Points will extract a value from the raster to a new feature class of points.

If your grid is a feature class and not a raster, then a Spatial Join will also do the job.
