topic Problem with appending feature class to another in ArcSDE geodatabase in Data Management Questions

Desktop: ArcGIS Desktop 10 sp1.
Database server: ArcSDE 9.3.1 enterprise geodatabase in an instance of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise; Windows Server 2000 Advance sp4.

ArcGIS Desktop 10 connects to sde geodatabase via ArcSDE connection.

Issue: I used the Append tool to append a feature class (10 rows) in a personal geodatabase to another feature class (1749 rows) in sde geodatabase. After append operation was said to complete successfully, I saw the total number of appended feature class is 1759 rows in the ArcCatalog. However, when I saw total number is 1752 rows in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. In addition, attribute values of those 10 rows in the appended feature class could not be updated via a stored procedure that worked perfectly in the past two year.

If I used the Merge tool, everything was good.
