Geography Preview not being displayed

I have numerous files that that I am able to preview the table in ArcCatalog and ArcMap but unable to preview the geography. When added in ArcMap the display is blank, but I can open the attribute table select a feature and pan/zoom/flash but not identify that feature. I have tried exporting the SDE feature class to a file db and the geography reappears along with the table data. I can then reimport to the SDE database and everything funcitons correctly, geography displays and table info. What could be causing this issue? It is across multipe SDE databases that it is occuring on seemingly random feature classes.

Is there a better way to fix the problem besides exporting and reimporting?

You may need to recalculate the spatial extent of the feature class using sdelayer -o alter -l <table,column> -E calc -u <DB_user_name> -p <DB_user_password>. The -E option calculates the feature class envelope. Once the envelope has been calculated, you should be able to see the feature in both ArcCatalog and ArcMap.
