Thanks for the quick reply. Apparently I was mistaken when I said in my post that Arc SDE 9.3.0 didn't support Oracle 11G, looking further I found that SDE 9.3.0 does support for Oracle 11G R1 but only the 32 bit version, so if I install ArcSDE 9.3.0 for Oracle 11G
it should work without upgrading the ArcGIS Engine to 9.3.1. also, I was able to run one of my applications with ArcGIS Engine at 9.3.0, ArcSDE at 9.3.1 and Oracle 10G, I did have to upgrade my SDE geodatabase to bring it to the 9.3.1 level.

While a mixed installation of Engine 9.3.0 and SDE 9.3.1 seems to work at least under windows, it's probably not a good idea to install different versions of ArcGIS Engine and SDE.

Yeah, 9.3.0 support life has ended and 9.3.1 is about to end, that's a different issue all together, for now I live in the ArcGIS 9.3 world.

Thanks

Our database is going to by upgraded to Oracle 11g, from Oracle 10G. Currently, our apps run under ArcGIS Engine 9.3.0,
ArcServer 9.3.0, and ArcSDE 9.3.0.

ArcSDE 9.3.0 doesn't support Oracle 11g, can we just install/upgrade ArcSDE 9.3.1 and leave the engine and the server at the version 9.3.0? Will this configuration work?

We don't need to upgrade any SDE database, or import/export any gis data, we will just create a new SDE database (9.3.1) from scratch.

Thanks

Best practice is to update the client before the server. I doubt anyone can make
any promises about 9.3.0 compatibility with 9.3.1.

You best bet will be to clone your environment, add a new 11g instance, import the
data, upgrade the instance (with 9.3.1sp2), and test. The upgrade your clients to
9.3.1sp2 and test again. I'd bet the 9.3.1sp2 client will be more stable, but keep in
mind that all of 9.3.x is bearing down on retirement 31-Dec-2013, so this Oracle
upgrade isn't gaining you much slack.

- V
