Can't add field to layer

am not able to add a field to a layer that i had added fields to yesterday. keep getting a general function error messege.

have tried using arcmap and arc catalog-no success.

running ArcMap 10 sp2

i have spent hours trying different things and searching the web for similar problems and solution, so far no luck.

You've probably checked this - but you are not currently editing this layer, or another in the same location? You can't add fields if you are in an edit session.

thx for the response.

i did indeed check to mae sure that i wasn't in edit mode.

i have since upgraded to sp5 but still no luck.

What type of layer is this? (i.e. SDE feature class, File Geodatabase feature class, shapefile)?

Are there any schema locks? For example if an ArcGIS Server service is using this data, that would place a schema lock on the data.

Can you post a screen shot of the error you are receiving?

I am glad to say that JSkinn3's questions got me looking at one of our other departments usage. I found out that they did have Arc open with a working drawing that had the geodatabase features I was trying to add fields to open.

Had them close Arc and opened mine and was able to add/delete fields.
