Editing Metadata

I have a shapefile which I need to add metadata to.
I am unable to select 'edit' in ArcCatalog to modify the metadata (not provided as an option). In my dataset, it is the only shapefile which doesnt allow for editing. How can I fix this and edit the metadata?

[ATTACH=CONFIG]26723[/ATTACH]I am currenlty working with metadata through ArcGIS 10.1. The edit metadata button is there and works for me on .shp file. What version of arcgis are you working with?

Maybe the person who made the.shp put a constrait when they made the metadata.

I am using ArcGIS 10.1 and I am able to edit metadata for most of my .shp files.
For the file I am interested in, the edit 'button' is not visible.
I dont understand why this is and how to enable it.
