Cannot register as versioned, cannot delete topology

In our geodatabase, one of the feature datasets contains 3 feature classes and one topology. We need to make some edits on the feature classes but when I try to register as versioned, I get the message, "One or more of the selected objects does not support moving edits to base. This option is not available". When I click OK, I get the message, "Failed to register as versioned". I thought possibly the topology was causing problems, so I decided to delete it, make the edits and then re-create the topology. When I try to delete the topology, I get, "Failed to delete selected objects". What can I do to make the versioning work, so the edits can be completed? Thanks.

I get the same error, despite following these instructions exactly:

Is there a work-around for this? I'm all patched up to the latest 10 SP 2.
