Current status of GPX conversion?

I am starting a project for school using a handheld Garmin (Oregon 550t) and I was more than a little surprised to see how the GPX to Features tool only brings in points and doesn’t create the track as a line. After doing some searching I seem to be finding that all posts about this are 3 or more years old. There seems to have been wide spread interest in improving this tool but as of yet I haven’t found a promising solution. What links I am finding are generally broken (due to age). I see this as an opportunity to create the needed tool as a part of my project, but I obviously don’t want to recreate the wheel. What is the current buzz (if any) on the existence and/or need for an improved GPX conversion?

GPX To Features—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop says two sets of info are collected and you can use this to connect the points... Points To Line—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

BUT the first help topic describes the process to produce them, so read carefully

Thanks Dan, this will prove very helpful. I was able to create the lines; with these instructions it wasn't hard. I will see if I can streamline it for my project and if I accomplish something worth sharing I will do so.
