Cannot upgrade a user schema geodatabase

Hello

We are trying to upgrade from Oracle 10g/ArcSde9.3 to Oracle 11.2.0.3/ArcSde10.1 on a new server

The data are imported in Oracle 11g.
We install ArcSde

In ArcCatalog, we make a direct connection sde:oracle11:server/instance
We launch the check -> result ok
But when we launch the upgrade we have this error in the sde_setup.log

[Wed Apr 24 12:17:23 2013] Cannot upgrade a user schema geodatabase
when the master schema geodatabase is at a previous release.
The master schema geodatabase must be upgraded first.
[Wed Apr 24 12:17:23 2013] ERROR: Geodatabase schema object install not completed (-522).

In th e sdedc_Oracle.log i have this message
[Wed Apr 24 12:16:53 2013] [27461] [TLSDK4337] db_array_fetch_attrs OCI Fetch Error (28595)
[Wed Apr 24 12:16:53 2013] [27461] [TLSDK4337] load_buffer error -51 on GDB_REPLICAS, rowid -1

Are you using user-schema geodatabases? Did you upgrade the master (SDE)
geodatabase first (as required)? Have you applied 10.1 SP1 to the Desktop client?

You'd probably be better off working with Tech Support for this sort of issue.

U se the user sde to make the upgrade.
What do you mean by "Did you upgrade the master (SDE) geodatabase first (as required)?"
-> How do you make this step ?

One of the many flaws in user-schema geodatabases is that they must all be at the
same release at the same time -- Upgrade of one requires upgrade of all, master
geodatabase first. This procedure is documented; are you following the procedure?

The error message disagrees (though that doesn't mean that something wonky in
your geodatabase metadata isn't the root of the problem). I again recommend that
you create a Tech Support incident to resolve this issue.

How can i specify that i want upgrade first the MASTER geodatabase ?

I etablihed my direct connection with the suer sde

It's the default. You are apparently specifying a wrong option in either the UI
or the Python command line. Did I mention that Tech Support deals with install/
upgrade issues all the time?

I have changed the string for the direct connection sde:oracle11:server/instance by server/instance and it works !!!

I don't have any user schema geodatabase, but got the same error message as this thread is about.

I changed the string for the direct connection to only the Net Service name and it worked !!!

Don't ask me why either...

[NIM084987 - When upgrading an ArcGIS 10 SP5 geodatabase to ArcGIS 10.1, while connecting with the syntax 'sde:oracle11g:TNSNAME' the upgrade fails with the error 'ERROR: geodatabase schema object install not completed (-522).']
