Changing SDE Password (2-tier architecture)

Hi,

can i change SDE password while using (direct connection/2 tier architecture) on the Fly ?

or i need to kill all connections then pause the geodatabase and then change the password ?

How many users have the SDE user password? Are any using it (for reconcile, et al) at the
moment you want to change the password? If not, and there's no application server running,
then there's no need to bounce the application server (though if you have a service, and it isn't
running, you should probably alter the password in the service before you forget).
