Move vertex in edit sketch / cut line

Hi All,

I'm relatively new to 10.1, just upgrading from 9.31. I am having trouble finding some functionality that I fear ESRI has removed from 10/10.1. I'm hoping that I am just missing something.

When I am drawing an edit sketch or cut line, previously I could momentarily suspend the sketch and use the edit pointer to fine tune vertices on the sketch. I see that yes, I can still move vertices, but now it is only via an absolute x & y dialog box, which is not equivalent in terms of efficiency or accuracy to being able to move the vertex with the mouse.

This functionality was particularly useful when digitizing or doing "freehand" edits. I used this literally every day and I am sorely missing it!

I do like many of the changes made to the editing interface, however, the absence of just this one minor piece has me strongly considering moving back to 9.31. What am I missing??

Hi Sean,

In an editing session, you can double click the feature which will display the vertices, you can them select a single vertex to move it as necessary, is this what you were looking for?

Hi Melanie,

That's not exactly what I was talking about. I was referring to the actual edit sketch as it is being drawn - before the feature is accepted or the cut line finished.

In 9.3 you could "set down" the pencil and then use the edit pointer to move the vertices in the line you were drawing - then you could "pick up" the pencil again and continue along. This was esepcially useful if you were drawing an irregularly- curved feature (ubiquitous in digitizing natural features) and decided a few points in to modify the shape you were drawing. I do this literally every day, sometimes scores or even hundreds of times in a day.

Right now it seems like this functionality is absent, and one can either:
a) Hit undo until your sketch is backed up far enough and start over from that point, or
b) Accept your feature with the poor geometry and manually move your points as a second step.

Neither of these options is very efficient, and option B is very problematic if you are cutting polygons, because you then have to change the vertices of two polygons and hope that the snapping is perfect so you don't have slivers.

Does anybody else have any insight into this issue? Am I perhaps not explaining it correctly? Can anyone from ESRI say for certain whether or not this is still possible in 10.1?

Please tell me that this functionality was not lost / removed in the new version... Assuredly NOT a step forward.

This is not possible in 10.1
We will be putting this capability back in, in a future release.

Thank you for confirming this, Sean.

For what it is worth, the loss of this functionality makes the editing process much more difficult for a great many of us - particularly those who do a lot of cutting & merging complex-shaped polygons.

When functionality like this is added, I assume it would be via a minor release (i.e. 10.2) rather than via a service pack. Is that a correct?

Thanks again for the response. Its good to at least know I'm not missing anything.
