ArcSDE 10 upgrade problem with permissions

I'm trying to upgrade an ArcSDE 9.3.1 SP3 database (Oracle 10.2.0.1, Solaris) to ArcSDE 10. I've verified that the SDE user has all of the required privileges. When I run thejust pre-requisite check, it comes back and says that everything is good to go - all the required privileges have been granted and the database is configured for ST_GEOMETRY. But, when i try to run the upgrade, I get a message that the SDE user does NOT have the required privileges, and that the database is NOT configured for ST_GEOMETRY. I know I haven't switched databases, but beyond that I have no idea what the problem could be. I am attempting the upgrade using ArcCatalog 10 SP1 from a Windows XP client.

Oracle 10.2.0.1 isn't supported for either ArcSDE 9.3.1 or 10.0 (one of the primary problems was
spurious permission errors during setup). The minimum supported Oracle release is 10.2.0.3.

My apologies - the version of Oracle is in fact 10.2.0.3.
