Can't add data from geodatabase

I am trying to connect to a geodatabase I obtained from a local city government. When I try to add data from it in arcmap or view it in arccatalog, the .gdb apears as a regular folder and if I click on it nothing else comes up. Opening it through windows explorer reveals it has 262 items in it. Any idea why can't I add data from it?

Ryan,

Sounds like the data got corrupted during transfer. It is best to have the originator zip the file for transfer or better yet use map packages for transferring data.

don't use gdb's much, but you mentioned municipality.. is there any chance that they licensed it?

perhaps corrupt or improperly sent, as previously indicated... give this a try

Hi, thanks for the responses. I am wondering if it got corrupted, I will

ask to see if they can zip it for me. I doubt that they have licensed it, I

can ask but I think they would have mentioned it if they had. And as for

the script... I don't really know much about Python but I could give it a

try.

Ryan... it is a tool in arctoolbox ... Data Management tools, File geodatabase ... etc etc.

ah-ha... I just saw syntax and assumed that meant a script.

Ok, so I ran the recovery and created a new gdb to output the data into.

When I try to add data, the new gdb shows up as you would expect, but I get

an error message: "Failed to connect to database. This release of the

GeoDatabase is either invalid or out of date. [Invalid Geodatabase

release]." So... does that mean that the release they're using is

incompatible with my version, or something else?

could be, you would have to know the version of arcmap they are using and yours...I haven't looked at the other tools in the toolbox. Probably time to give them a call in the morning...

Try aright-click to open the properties of the gdb (recommend doing this on the new one or a copy of the original) and seeing if the option to "update" is there. That might do the trick .

I'm assuming you mean right clicking in windows explorer, I didn't see any

way to right click anywhere else. Tried it, there was no update option. I

also noticed, the new database was waaaaay smaller than the original. Down

to about 2 mb from 780 mb.

I meant to right-click for the properties in Catalog. Or is it still not showing up in Catalog?

They are using version 10.2. That should be compatible right?

It should be, but if you see the upgrade button, I would try it (have a backup, of course). Short of going back to the data owner, and if you have already tried all that was suggested previously, and you tried Resetting your ArcGIS application profile then that might be the last thing I can think of to try. The resetting your profile is always a good first try when things go wonky....resets things on your side, in case something it conflicting.

If it's a shareable download, one last options is to upload it here (you'll need to use the Advanced editor in the upper right of your edit window....and need to be in a browser tab "outside" of your inbox....that is, open the thread up in a new tab). Then others can take a look at it to see if it's a data issue of issue on your end.
