topic Compare and Average Surrounding DEM Cells and Return Values in Data Management Questions

I have a 10m DEM of a project area that I need to reclass into three slope positions: canyon, mid-slope and ridge top. This was a previously executed analysis that I need to re-create. The process previously used was:

Compare the height of each cell in the DEM with the average of the surrounding cells in a 50m radius neighborhood. If the target cell was 25m higher than the average of the surrounding cells, that cell was classed as a ridge (and I'm guessing this means '25m or higher'). If the cell was 20m lower than the target cell, then it's classed as a canyon. All remaining were classed as mid-slope.
(this description was taken directly out of the paper that was previously produced).

While I have a general idea of how this should work, I don't have a real idea how to do it (I'm not a programmer) and its been ages since I've done this type of grid analysis.

Any advice, hints, tips etc would be much appreciated. Heather
