sde.GDB_items table not found

I have a machine with 9.4 installed. I'm trying to connect to our production SDE server (SDE 9.3.1, SQL Server 2005)). I can create a connection as normal and when I hit test connection it says connection succeeded but when I try to expand the connection I get the attached error. The table it is saying cannot be found does not exist in the database. Interestingly I can explore our raster SDE server and our development server no problem and they are both running the same configuration as our production one.

One other thing that might be relative is that I had to download and install the latest SQL native client in order to connect initially.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
