with Direct Connect, do I still need to install ArcSDE for 10.0?

Great sticky up there with ArcSDE 10.1.

my situation is I have an Oracle 11g on Linux as database server

I would prefer Not have to setup a SDE 10 application server, because all my connections will be direct connect.

Client side: ArcGIS desktop 10.0 sp5, Oracle Client 11g 32bit.
TNS name is set properly because using sqlplus I can make the connection to my Oracle db box

However when I tried to setup direct connect in ArcCatalog, I got this error:"Failed to connect to the specified server. This SDE server does not support this client or operation"

so my question is what do I need to do to enable direct connect without installing full ArcSDE in 10.0 environment? Thanks a lot!

Hi Rong,

I've seen this error before when Oracle Text is not installed. I would check to see whether this component is installed or not.

The same issues apply to ArcSDE 10.0 as ArcSDE 10.1, except the 'sdesetup' option
is still available to create the geodatabase. IMHO, you should always install the
application server software, even if you don't intend to run a service -- especially at
10.0, where the ArcGIS doesn't have all the support utilities added at 10.1.

Do you have a 10.0sp5 geodatabase installed in the Oracle database (e.g., SDE
user created, ST_GEOMETRY installed, and SDE metadata tables present)? You
can't Direct Connect before installation is completed.

Thankfully we have a great DBA, problem solved. He said he ran the ArcSDE for Linux and run sedsetup command, and created SDE user and repository, etc. the installation guide was pretty helpful
