I currently have a DEM from 1 meter LIDAR elevation data, and I have been tasked with figuring out which is the best algorithm to coarsen the resolution to 3 meter and 5 meter DEMs. I need to provide citation as because I need to write a report about this as well. Someone mentioned generating a roughness index and using that to make a determination? Anyone have any ideas?

Can't help you with citation, but my starting point would be the resample tool with resampling technique set to bilinear och cubic convolution.

Although I could not find anything about a "roughness index", I did read up more on nearest neighbor, bilinear interpolation, and cubic convolution. Many sources have said use bilinear or cubic or continuous data, such as elevation surfaces. I only question now is, which of the two is the best for elevation data? I need documentation as well. Anybody?

From what I read on ESRI desktop help, I decided that bilinear interpolation is the best for resampling elevation data. Does anyone have a link to a good paper about resampling DEMs that I could cite?
