Hello - I am reinstalling ArcSDE 9.3 onto a Windows Server 2008 machine. We had to reinstall Windows Server, now I am reinstalling ArcSDE. The SDE databases worked fine before. Now though I cannot get the post install to work. When I get to the step "User Information - user information required to connect to SQL Server", fill in the info, and hit Next, I get "The ArcSDE Repository was unsuccessfully completed." When I click Yes to see the log I get a window saying wise_err.log, and it is EMPTY.

The log file sde_setup has messages like
Creating GeoDatabase Schema
---------------------------
dbo.GDB_tables_last_modified already exists!
dbo.GDB_Release already exists!
dbo.GDB_FeatureDataset already exists!
...
GeoDatabase Schema is up to date.

But nothing else. I can't get past this step, the error log is empty, but it will not proceed so I can set up the service.

As I said this did not happen before. How do I get past this error?

Are you completely re-creating your databases or starting with existing geodatabases?

You should probably contact ESRI support so they can gather all the necessary information and help you through this.

-Kim

The machine was the same as before, except for changes in Windows Server 2008 - apparently some patch was automatically installed overnight that really messed up the system, so we had to rebuild the C drive from scratch and reinstall everything. It is possible the Windows Server 2008 was slight different, our IT guys did the work.

However, I figured out how to get around the problem - instead of using the server post install wizard, I did everything through the command line with the sde utilities. For some reason that worked fine, and I've managed to recreate all the databases and services. So, I'm going to leave things as they are!

Probably a OS privileges issue.
If you've upgraded to WinServer 2008 R2 (your overnight patch?), try right-clicking the "SDE Post Install" in the Menu and choose 'Run as Administrator". That is, assuming you have Administrator privileges on the box.
Cheers

I was running into a similar issue when migrating our SDE Geodatabases from one machine to another. We were going from a Windows Server 2003 SP2 64 bit, running SQL Server 2005 to Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit running SQL Server 2008. Our SDE install is currently at 9.3.1 SP2.

The post install would error when creating the Repository. In the Repository information text file I received the following error:

WARNING: Parameter "TEMP" not found in giomgr.defs file!

This was resolved by running running the post install as Administrator.

I've been having this same issue. I setup a test machine for trying out 64bit SDE. It's running Win7 and oracle 11g R2 x64. It seemed I didn't get this with SDE9.3 or 9.3.1. But after installing SP1 or SP2 I did. Not 100% sure if that was consistent though. I tried a handful of times running it at different points. But it takes a while to delete and re-create the oracle databases so I know I didn't try all combinations.

I went back and tried 32bit oracle and SDE on the same machine and ran into the same problem with SP2. Didn't try anything pre SP2. Running as Administrator didn't fix it. But since there were no real errors, I decided to try just skipping on to the next step, authorization. That and the service went fine and it seems to be running. Not sure if something is missing that would cause problems later. But at least this is a test machine.
