Can't select features in shapefile when editing

I have the following problem:
I have a shapefile with polylines.
I want to edit some of the polylines.
I left right mouse click on the layer, then edit features followed by start editing
Next in the editor menu I click on the edit tool and try to select a feature.
For some reason I am not able to select a feature of the layer.
I have turned all other layers off.

It is no problem to add a new feature?

What could be the problem???

Is your layer selectable? You can right click on the layer go to selection and choose "Make this the Only Selectable Layer" or you can change the Table of Contents view to list layers by selection and change it there.

Thanks Jeff for the tips.

At this moment I don't have the problem. So I don't know what went wrong and why I don't hve the problem now.
At some point I was wondering if zoom size (how far are you zoomed in or out) could have something to do with the ability of selecting a feature?

I have noticed that selection is iffy when you zoom in to extreme scales.
