What does "Mark as New" do?

I accidentally hit the Mark as New option in the Post Options in my reply to this idea:

Hi @Bud, this is a feature built-in by our platform vendor that some other online communities may use, but we haven't incorporated it into our own workflows. After doing some testing, it appears that marking a post (rather than a reply) as new changes its appearance in the Latest Activity feed so that the post subject switches back to bold (as opposed to the lighter font for posts you've already looked at). Depending on the way a Latest Activity feed is set up, I'd speculate that this could potentially change the arrangement of posts showing up there though my testing was inconclusive in that regard.

It did nothing when I "marked as new" Bud's initial post early this morning.

Like you said, in certain community pages like as the ArcGIS Pro —> Videos page, marking the post as new makes it become bold again in the list:
