Hey Gregory,

I am new to Story Maps. I have created two story maps for my County representing tourist sites. I am having trouble with customization and could really use some help. Would you mind look at my current story map and giving me some suggestions? I am not a programmer but I understand a little bit of HTML which I have used to customize the titles for purposes of branding. These story maps are really important because they will be published to the public and I need to make sure they are perfect.

Also, I am in need of adding more icon colors to represent 11 different categories and also to extend the amount of points that I can add. I have approximately 194 tourist points and this story map template will only allow 100.

Thank you in advance for any help or advice.

Hey Amanda,

Your Tour is looking good, I like the colors.

There is four FAQ entries that should answer all your questions:

- Can I use more than 99 points?‌

- The downloadable version

- Can I use the builder with the downloadable?

- Can I customize the map icons?

Doing 11 categories for 194 points may be a lot of icon creation work.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Have you also considered Shortlist?

Hi Gregory,

I have completed the following steps

Download the application and put on my web server.
Changed the required section on MAX_NB_SECTIONS:125 from config.js
Provided app id of the application created through map journal builder on index.html

};

When I open the application from my web server, it does not open with edit option.

I have reached to the GitHub and it says:

“Yes, when the template is configured with an application ID, adding the URL parameter 'edit' will open the builder. You will be prompted for user authentication through the Identity Manager.”

I am in the learning phase, any suggestion for the customization to add more than 100 section on map journal will be appreciated.

Thank you for you reply and thank you for the compliment! Although, I feel like maybe the Map Tour I created doesn't quite suite the amount of data or how it needs to be represented.

I am interested int he Shortlist style and I am reading through the tutorials on how to create the short list. Question... could I possibly use my existing Web Map? It says you have to create one in your ArcGIS online in order to load all your shortlist layers.

Also, once, I load all my features into the Web Map (which I was planning on making a layer for each category - ie.- Activities, Arts & Culture, Boating & Fishing, Equine, etc.), how do I go about creating the custom icons for each category?

I am sure I will be able to figure it out eventually, but any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated!

Yes a shortlist may be better for you especially if you have meaningful way to categorize your data.

Most of user won't browse through 194 points in a Map Tour.

The shortlist and Map Tour data model are not the same so you won't be able to reuse your Map Tour webmap.

But they are not so different, if you used a csv to build your Tour you will just have to copy/paste a bit.

If you need more than 100 icons for a category, you will have to follow the same pattern than Map Tour.

The configuration of Shortlist takes places in index.html.

You must be almost there!

The edit button won't be present, you have to specify to open yourself through the application URL.

To open the builder, your URL have to end by '?edit', something like http://myserver/MapTour/index.html?edit

Hey Gregory,

Thanks for your help and advice so far...

I did build a new web map for the Short List app with the different categories (Activities, Arts & Culture, Boating & Fishing, etc) there are approx 11 categories. I set them up in individual point shapefiles, zipped the shapefiles, and then loaded them into my web map.

I am to the point in the Short List creation where I have to install the application. The instructions say that I need to configure the index.html file with the web map ID, etc. I get that part, but I am confused about the color of the points in each tabbed category. Can you list your own color choices? It says there are a default of 4 colors (green, red, blue, purple) and I have 11 different categories. How would I do that?

Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I just wanted to take the time to message you back and thank you for all the helpful tips and the tutorial information for the Shortlists. I was able to create and configure a Shortlist Story Map for our Tourist Guide Bureau's - Tourist Sites. I also wanted to share the finished product. (please see link below). Hi Amanda,

Thanks, you are welcome. Some of your tab names contains a underscore, you can edit that through ArcGIS Online Map Viewer by renaming the layers. Note that the Map Viewer doesn't display underscore them but they are there, you will see them while editing. Also note that to remove them you have to make more edit than just removing the underscore or Map Viewer will detect that and keep the underscore. In other word rename your layer "abcd", save then rename it with the proper tab name
