Crowdsource Beta Feedback

After working with the crowdsource storymap beta version for a little, here are a few ideas that I think would be improvements.

Email notification of a submission to owner
Ability to delete submissions
Ability to hide submissions (make data not readable by anyone)
Have location symbol change color when selected.

Thank you for your feedback. We are hoping to bring many of the enhancements, many of which have already been on our enhancement list, in a future version of the Crowdsource. A couple comments and questions:

Email notification of a submission to owner
- Unfortunately we will not be able to add this in the near term. For technical and security reason, we can not provide notifications directly from the app to the user. We are investigating if it is feasible to enhance ArcGIS Online with an messaging system that can work with app templates.
Ability to delete submissions
- Definitely to come. Currently in the builder, you can choose to "reject" a contribution which will hide it in the public version of the app.
Ability to hide submissions (make data not readable by anyone)
- Can you provide more information about how you would like hide to work? Just remove it from the public version? Hide it in the app altogether, even in builder? Hide it in the feature service in ArcGIS online? How would this be different from delete?
Have location symbol change color when selected.
- We are thinking about adding this in one of the next releases.

If we can hide submissions then we can keep a record of what was submitted, versus deleting them.

Does "rejecting" them in the builder work? This will remove them from the public story but still allow you to view them in the builder if you choose to show "all" or "rejected" posts.

Hello,

Yes, the hide feature works fine.

I would like to suggest the ability for people to send feedback or have a place to put a contact on the map. There is not a location right now for people to contact the map owner.

I have also found that the map is a little slow to load, or process photos when I am on my mobile, it is an android Moto G.

Hello,

I have another suggested fix/update. The program loads slow on people's phones. Also, the photo upload seems to get stuck. This happens when the photo is touched and it wants to crop the image, then it gets stuck on re-sizing. This photo upload also takes a long time.

Maybe the photo cropping is not necessary in the photo upload, people can crop the images in their phone programs.

Thanks for your feedback. We have noticed others having issues with the photo cropping and are planning to remove that in the next release. For the photo upload, do you mean the time between you choose the photo to the time it appears in the form or do you mean when you click the save to submit a new contribution?

The new image loader that is coming in the next release should speed up the load time. In my most recent test, it seemed about 30-50% faster on my phone. Beyond just loading the photo in the browser, we are also resizing and resampling all the photos before we upload them to make sure they upload quickly when you click save even on slower internet connections. This also insures that viewer of the app will also experience faster loading. We will try to also optimize this in future releases.

Hello,

I was just trying to use the crowdsource story map we have and noticed a few issues:

- initial load time was slow

- locate me does not seem to work, and it brings up a map with the wrong location.

- the text field activation is slow, it takes quite a bit of time before active.

Thanks for your feedback. Could you provide us with a little more information so we can help optimize the app in the future.

1. What device, browser, and internet connection (ethernet, wifi, cellular) are you using? How many points are in your crowdsource story? Do you have a public link you can share to your story?

2. In most cases the location provided by the browser is determined by your internet service provided. If you are using a personal internet connection at home or a cellular connection, your location should be pretty accurate. In some cases, ISP's do not share correct information for privacy reason. If you are on a corporate network, your location may be less reliable due to how your company sets up their network. For example, I work in a small regional office in VA, but our headquarters is in CA which is where the connection is registered so it sometimes looks like my location is in CA. How far off is the location that is provided?

3. Which text field activation? Do you mean clicking on a text input in the participate form and the time it takes before you can start typing?

My answers are below.

1. Android on cellular network. There are 55 points in the story. Here is the map http://arcg.is/29ETvMB

2. I was on my phone cellular network which in the past has been accurate using the Locate Me feature on the app. But this time the Locate Me did not seem to behave like other locate me features, or as it did in the past. The location was put on 6th Ave while I was on 10th.

3. The Title text field in the participation form has a delay in response. After the picture uploads, when you tap Title to enter text it has a long delay. This could be an issue with people wanting to interact, they may tire of the wait.

Thanks for your response. We'll try to continue optimize the app as much as we can for these scenarios. A couple notes that may help. The accuracy the we can provide through the locate me feature is limited to what your phone will provide. Here are a couple tips that may improve accuracy:

Make sure you have given your browser permission to access your phone's location (IP address location is much less accurate)
On Android, make sure you have your phones location's setting set to "high accuracy."
Due to how GPS and other location signals work, location will be most accurate outside with a clear open sky. If you have tall buildings/trees around you, the signal will bounce off these walls causing your accuracy to decrease.

The delay to enter text after you pick a photo is due to the photo having to load into the browser and reading its location. Most phones limit how much processing power it will provide to the web browser which can cause the "stall" in the user interaction momentarily until it finishes.

Hello,

I had another thought about potential additions to the crowdsource map template. It would be nice to get some sort of comment/feedback on the map as people use it, within the application. This could be through something like a "rate the app" or email link.
