German Characters not being kept when I load CSV File

I have German text that I am adding to my story map. The text is over one thousand characters long so if I add it through the template the text is truncated to one thousand characters and the end is then snipped off.

I have tried to get around this by adding the text from a csv that I am using now to create the story map. The problem I am now having is that the German characters are not being recognized and I get these question mark symbols like "?" where the German characters should be.

Anyone know how to get round my problems?

You need to add the German Font to your systems

First check to see if your computer is hiding the German Font.

Go to your control panel and click on Fonts. Then click on Font Settings.

Uncheck the box.

Go back to your Fonts and see if your German Font is included. If it is not then install it. Generally you can install a font to your computer by double clicking on it.

That is Windows 7

Click the window icon and type in fonts

I just did this Robert and unchecked the box but when I go back into fonts I don't see German, this is what I see:

Then you should get the font that can display those character and install them.

When you open the .csv file are the German characters visible.

when I open the .csv the German characters are visible but when I upload the .csv to create a story map the German characters disappear from the story map.

What do you use to open the .csv?

If the German Characters are visible then you must have the font on your computer.

Where are you viewing the story map? on the same computer? Is the storymap being loaded online and viewed that way?

Here is a snippet of my German text as it is in the .csv file:

The first letter contains a German character which will disappear when I load the .csv file.

I load the .csv file using the following in AGOL:

I click on "Import Tour data from a CSV file" button and load the .csv

When the .csv has been loaded and the Story Map created the above text with the German character now looks like this:

This is happening for all German characters within the text, and that is my problem.

That's what I was afraid of. It is like making a map using fonts as symbols and putting it in a .pdf. Then you send the pdf to someone else and if you did not embed the fonts they will be converted to a standard font automatically.

As far as I know ArcGIS online does not support custom fonts. Only the standard fonts.

It would only work if you were hosting the AGOL yourself and the font would have to be installed on the server.

But Robert, If I create a story map from a template I can copy and paste German text into a description field and the German characters are fine, and this is on the same AGOL I am trying to upload the .csv where the German characters get corrupted.

I don't understand why.
