How do you duplicate or copy a Map Journal?

I want to duplicate one of my existing Map Journal to try out different things with it. How do I save a copy of it?

When you save your original map, a dialog box will appear that says "Application Successfully Saved."

Copy the http link under "How do I get back to the builder interface?"

Then navigate to your My Content list of folders etc. (http://egeo.maps.arcgis.com/home/content.html)

Click Add Item > An Application

Then paste your URL (the http link - it should like something like: http://bit.ly/8k2b4AsP ).

You will also have to fill in a title (this should be a different name to your original map e.g. Map2) and at least one tag.

Click My Content again (in the top title bar).

Voila!

Ok, it seems that my idea above works, but only on the surface. The new "copies" are more like shortcuts to the original, so you would have to change the bitly to truly create a new application.

Hi,

There is no way to copy a Map Journal from Map Journal builder or ArcGIS Online yet.

We are working on adding that feature, it's high priority for our next release. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, here is the easiest way I know:

Open ArcGIS Online Assistant and sign-in
Click "I want to..." and then "Copy content"
In the popup, login with the same account
Find your item on the left side and drag and drop it to one of the box on the right side

Go to ArcGIS Online > My content and open the new item (tips: using the modified column date sorting to find the new item easily)

Notice that the id of your new item (in the browser URL bar) is not the same that the one in the item data URL (the id of the item data URL is still the id of the original Journal)

Click the "EDIT" button
Edit the URL field by replacing the appid with the one from the URL bar

Click SAVE

Your new Map Journal reference the same maps and medias.

Besides that everything is duplicated (narrative content, global settings, section configuration) so you can truly experiment.

Is there a way to use the ArcGIS Online Assistant with enterprise logins? I seem to only be able to login to Assistant using an ArcGIS Online account, which I've added to our organization.

This seems to work on the surface, but afterwards all layers that have been shared from outside arcgis online become inaccessible when I do it. Even trying to add new stories to the map doesn't work, all the content from outside arcgis online is inaccessible. I am getting the following error message:

Unable to establish a secure connection to the layer. The layer, DOF_LI_ONE, cannot be added to the map.

What could be the underlying cause? Everything works fine in the original story.

I found out why: When making the copy, the ArcGis Online Assistant automatically changes the URL of the App from HTTP:// to HTTPS://

After changing the URL back to HTTP everything works as expected.

Using this method works...the first time. I made a copy of a Story Map Journal. Edited it and renamed it. So using my original as a "template" worked well.

However when i went in again to make another copy I got the following error message in a pink box popup:

Copy failed! item xxxname of filexxxx already exists.

It creates a new file in the right hand box but it is white text in a red box and doesn't become available in My Contents.

Any ideas on how to make multiple copies?

Reason is I've got a long Story Map Journal and want to break it up into several Story Map Journals that I can now put in individual tabs of the new Story Map Series format. I don't want to have to re-embed all the text, photos, captions, etc.

Hi Mike,

That's just a limitation of how the copy works in the AGO Assistant right now. You might have to reload the AGO Assistant for it to pick up the name change on the item. You can also try the Admin Tools for ArcGIS from GeoJobe (in the ArcGIS Marketplace -- there's a free and paid version), which may handle this workflow better.

I use the AGO Assistant quite a bit and have never had any problems... though the first few times, it took some careful thinking on my part to make sure I did it properly.
