ArcReader Find Tool Slow in Publised Map

Hello - Need a little help (ArcMap 9.3.1 and ArcReader 9.3.1)

Here's what I'm seeing:

I created a map in ArcMap 9.3.1 and published it to a .pmf file for ArcReader.   When I open the ArcReader map and click on the Find icon (binoculars) it takes 10 seconds to pop up the Find window.

From there I choose the Address Tab - takes 7 more secs, - choose my address locator and then can find my address quickly. If I exit out of the Find tool and then go back in - everything pops up and loads and finds quickly. If I exist out of the map, and re-open the map,   it's slow again for the first time that I use the tool.

I have all the associated files - pmf, shape files, address locator, etc - in one folder on the hard drive. The address locator I used is based on one field in the Addresses shape file containing the full address.   I placed an attriute index on that field in the Address shape file. Is that an inefficient way to do it?

Are there cache settings - is the cache being cleared each time I exit ArcMap or ArcReader? Can I default the address locator in the published map or in ArcReader and will that help?

I had the same problem in 9.3x. It took 4 seconds to load the find dialog, 4 seconds to switch to the Addresses tab and 10 seconds to find my address locator. According to ESRI techs I talked to it takes time to process the address locator. The reason Google maps is quickers is that they have two million dollar servers to do the processing for them.

THE SOLUTION I have found that ArcReader 10 is much quicker! It takes 4 seconds to bring up the dialog, but switching to the Locators tab and selecting my address locator takes only a second each. Now it is usable!

Thanks for replying! That's good to know. I'm trying to use the developer's sample Address Locator vb.net script to generate my own find tool. I'm new to ArcObjects and to VB.Net so I'm having some trouble. I'm close to getting it to work - but have at least one syntax error.

All I really need to do is have the map open, and connect the address locator to the Find tool - I think. Any experience with that?

I haven't had any luck with that. I tried working with registry keys and changing the default, but I didn't have much luck. The locator is always in the drop-down list in 10, so it isn't a big problem.

Thanks for the info! I haven't downloaded version 10 yet - but I did write a vb.net app to provide a quick address, intersection or street locator.

We'd like to give our officers a tool that gives them the choice of a map connected to our SDE or a quick address finder on their hard drives for situations when they hit a dead spot or the air cards are too slow. ArcReader may serve those purposes but I'd need to provide the ability to route them to a destination.

I'm looking into ArcGISExplorer - but haven't quite figured out how to point to an address locator on the hard drive - if you can - for when they want to use stand alone mode.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. And if anyone wants a copy of my vb.net app, just ask - but bear in mind I'm new to VB.net and new to ArcObjects so the code may not be pretty 🙂

Does anyone know if I can use ArcReader 10 but publish from ArcGIS 9.3? I'm having issues with 'find' being slow also.

The first time I use the find tool it take a very long time to open, close to 60 seconds.
After the first time it pops right up. (Version 10)

You can use a PMF created in 9.3.1 in Arcreader 10 just fine.

Also, you can shorten the list of default locators by going to C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\ArcReader10.0\Locators\DefaultLocators.xml , open in wordpad and delete all but the locator you want to use. Copy this file to all users computers and its much less confusing.

I'm having a similar issue. I created an address locator for my pmf. It works fine in the mxd, but when I try to search for an address in the pmf it just spins and spins. Any thoughts?
