Bump.

So, is reader going to get more functionality, or is Explorer Desktop going to start to see the same functionality that we get with Reader, but with services, because you cannot replace something with something else unless the replacement actually replaces the replaced functionality.

Hi Ted,

ArcGIS Explorer Desktop is the focus for new feature development. It is an alternative to ArcReader, but not necessarily a replacement.

Thank you Mark. Explorer Desktop is a lot slower than Reader. It doesn't like our data as much as Reader, but I understand why... I will have to test it with the hosted maps, so that might speed things up.

Yes, Explorer Desktop is just too slow to open and at handling large vector datasets, and the interface is too clunky (Oh, it also always changes the W7 desktop to classic). What most users like about ArcReader is the interface similarity to other programs (SMT) and ArcMap used in O&G exploration. People that are doing this type of work are not always interested in a WebApp (which are also too slow), just a clean interface, and good performance. I was also hoping for some increased functionality and performance; too bad ArcReader is dead software.

This is really sad. The whole reason I coughed up the BIG Bucks for ArcInfo and Publisher was the ability to publish comprehensive map packages ie ArcReader projects, that a simpleton can enter coordinates into and easily determine if it is in or out of layer of interest. I may be missing something:confused:??? What ESRI product is to be used for this in the future?? I know it is not for all users to have ArcMap $$!!!! Please ADVISE...

Custom perhaps, but out of the box, SL Viewer or Flex Viewer just don't match the capability with Reader.
