topic ArcReader 10 error connecting to layer on 9.1 SDE server in ArcReader Questions

I'm looking for some help with an error I'm getting when opening a .PMF file. The file is having trouble connecting to the layers that have our SDE geodatabase as the source. The only computers it seems to work on are those that have ArcGIS Desktop installed.

It seems as though on the source tab, all of the information to make the database connection is there (the password is shown as a special character, but I'm guessing that's normal). The authentication mode is DBMS on the SQL server, which is only using one user account to connect to the database, so I don't believe it's any sort of permissions issue.

The error is:

ArcReader cannot currently access some of the data in this map.

You can still work with this map, but any layers for which the data is inaccessible will not be drawn. These layers will be shown in ArcReader's Table of Contents with a red exclamation point:....

Thanks for any assistance!

Also try connecting to the database using ArcSDE service instead of Direct connection.

Regards,

Thank you for your help. I believe it worked with the ArcSDE Service connection, but have to confirm with my GIS team still.

I thought I read somewhere though that the Direct Connection was better to use for whatever reason.

Thank you for your help. Still having some problems, but making some progress I think.

If I use ArcMap and change all of the sources on my layers to use the service connection instead of the direct connection, won't the map be unusable then by people still using a direct connection?
