Total limit of columns

Does anyone know if the is a limit to the number of columns that can be checked out?

I could get 99 columns to export. after that ArcMap crashses trying to export to ArcPad. IS there a way to increase the amount?

Which version of ArcPad are you using?

In ArcPad 8 there is an issue with checking out a feature class with more than 100 fields.

CQ00310076: ArcPad checkout tool cannot handle more than 100 fields

In ArcPad 10, you should be able to check out more than 100 fields, but I have run into issue at times with certain datasets. The following bug has been logged for that behavior:

CQ00312675: Checking out to axf causes a crash if maximum number of fields and/or number of characters in field names is reached

Unfortunately, there isn't a "maximum number of fields / characters" which has been defined.

I just tried a checkout using ArcPad 10.0.2 with a feature class containing 105 fields. The checkout completed successfully. I then tried a checkout with a feature class containing 205 fields. ArcMap crashed.

While ArcPad 10 handles these limits better than 8, you may still run into occasional problems.

The workaround would be to limit the visibility of fields which your field crew does not actually need. This can be done through the Layer Properties > Fields tab, via the Table of Contents.

When we switched from ArcDesktop 9.3 to 10 we had problems. It seemed to be caused by switching to .axf. Our magic number was around 60 fields. I figure it's not the amount of fields, but the total size of the record.

I found a workaround and have 163 columns. i named them all F1 to F163. In the "Alias" column i put the whole name of the field. when i export it to ArcPad is uses the Alias as the field name.

It is the size of the column heading.

Does the field size or field type affect checking out a feature class with more than 100 fields?

I have a feature class >100 fields that is a mixture of text, number and date fields.
I can successfully check out this layer if I reduce the total number of fields to <100 but if it the number exceeds 100 ArcMap crashes.

However, when I created a generic feature class w/ 140 fields labeled 1,2,3,4....139,140, ArcMap allowed me to check out this data
without crashing. What is going on? My field names for my original data contain no special characters and are all 30 characters or
less.

Does anyone have any advice on how to successfully check out my original data. I really don't want numbers/letters as my field typenames.
