If you create a version and then check out from the version and check back into the version you can use the tools for comparing a version with default to see your edits.

http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//002700000016000000.htm

Rolf

I'm using ArcMap 10 and ArcPad 10, and am wondering if the following is possible...

I use the "Get Data For Arcpad" function to export data for disconnected editing in the field.

The field user performs the edits.

I retrieve the edited data (axf file) and use the "Get Data From Arcpad" function to import the edits.

This function tells me how many edits have been made (before I commit to check-in), and it displays a summary after the check-in that shows whether or not each edit was successful, and whether the edit was a deletion, addition, etc.

What I'm wondering is, is there a way to, at that point, "step through' each of those edits, so that I can look at each change made to confirm that it's a good edit?

As far as I can see, my only choice is to do the check-in in an edit session, find the edits through external means (eg. paperwork which lists the edits), and then at the end either accept ALL of the edits (ie. save the edits) or disallow ALL of the edits (ie. don't save the edits). So it's all or nothing.

If there is a way to locate (in ArcMap) each of the edits done in the field, and accept/disallow each one, that would be fantastic.

I do not think that there is currently a way to do this using any out of the box setting in ArcPad/ArcGIS. Checking it in during an edit session and then having a flag field or two that denotes when the changes were made and approved would be one way. I could see the benefit of the option though.

I would suggest adding that functionality to the Data Manager Toolbar checkin process at the Ideas site (http://ideas.arcgis.com). Development is really looking toward that site for determining what fixes/additions they will include in future releases.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm trying to think through how adding in a 'flag' field might help me... say we add in a field that flags edits as new edits, I could then search through the data for that flag to find the edits, for sure.

But if, for example, the edit involved deleting a point, then after check-in, that point is now gone from the data, so the "new edit" flag field wouldn't be present either.

I'm not entirely familiar with the way our data is managed, and I'm sure there are ways to make that work, but it's a head scratcher for me, and beyond the scope of where I am wanting to go with it at this point.

Anyhoo, thanks for readng and replying. I appreciate it. 🙂

It won't help for deletions, but all my feature classes include a "Date Collected" field which shows the date collected in the field. Once I check in all my features (I just accept them all), I then go and look individually at each one by date collected. It's better than nothing.

If you create a version and then check out from the version and check back into the version you can use the tools for comparing a version with default to see your edits.

http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//002700000016000000.htm

Rolf

Hey rolf, thanks for the suggestion (and sorry for my slow response).

I worked through a versioning workflow, and am impressed with how it does allow me to see all of the edits that were made, in comparison to the default.

What I still seem to be missing though is a way to decide whether to accept/deny the individual edits.

If a feature was added in the "edit version" that I don't want to accept, I can simply delete that feature from the version before reconciling/posting back to default, so that's fine.

Same thing if I find that attributes were edited incorrectly, I can simply re-edit them in the edit version before reconciling/posting to default.

But say, for example, a feature is deleted in the edit version, when it should not have been. I haven't been able to figure out how to disallow, or "undo" that deletion. I thought that maybe I could simply copy back the (incorrectly) deleted feature from default, back into the edit version, before reconcile/post, but ArcMap doesn't allow me to do that, as I can't change versions while in an edit session.

So, any tips on how to deal with that scenario?
