Hello,

Does anyone out there know how to capture Shapefile points with elevation (Z) attribute values using ArcPad 10? I was told all I had to do was turn on the 3D Mode Only setting in GPS Preferences. However, I did this, captured some points, and the elevations are not there. When the elevation value attributes are collected, are they placed inside of the Shapefile's feature attribute table as an attribute? Or, elsewhere, in some other manner?

Thank you,
Travis

When creating the new feature class in ArcCatalog you must toggle on the Z value under "Geometry Properties" in order for it to be present. The 3D Mode Only option in ArcPad does not store the Z value.

What do you consider accurate? The MM10, even with a geoid separation value defined, will not provide what I would consider accurate elevations (survey accuracy). With an open view to the sky and low PDOP the unit may be within 2-4 meters, so if you are in an area with less than ideal coverage, then you can expect those values to less accurate. If you are wanting accurate elevations, then you need a unit that will provide the accuracy you desire. The MM10 is not it as a standalone unit.

Hola Travis,

I wanted to add my two cents to your post, and hopefully this applet will assist you and make things easier for you. I would agree with several of the responses on this post but I have also seen where this ArcScript will allow you to prepare your data to capture Z-values for your data. You may have to consider moving your data to a database format (fgdb, mdb, etc.) in order to use this ArcScript, the author has it written to work within ArcPad 10. This is not written by Esri or supported by us (Support Services/Esri) but we do post items that may assist our customers.

Good Luck!

Gracias, Travis!

Add XYZ to Table

http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=16785

Juan
