Large datasets and ArcPad Server Extension

Hi

I'm quit new to the ArcPad Server Extension

We have a database containing several rather large datasets. The plan is to make edits to these feature classes out in the field using ArcPad, preferable with the help of ArcPad Extension for ArcGIS Server.

Unfortunately we don???t have the opportunity to put up a map service with ArcPad capabilities for each area of interest (this would lead to dozen of services). So our plan is to put up a service covering the entire area of interest. This of course leads to very large axf files, so is there a way to limit the content of the axf to a custom area of interest?

Any ideas on how to approach this problem?

If i understand your question right, you could check out an .axf based on any extent (some shape you made up, districts or even extent of view when checking out.

Sigurd,

I don't know of any way that you would limit the extent of the data in a service once it has been published. The limiting of features needs to be done at the time that you "Author Project for ArcGIS Server".

One thought I had:

If the majority of your data is reference info (which won't be edited) you could think about creating different projects of several extents (of background read-only data) that reside on the mobile device and never change (at least not frequently). Then, you could add the service you create which only contains the layers which will actually be edited. This way, they have different projects of related background data to limit the overall size but can add the same service of editable layers to each project.
