Hi all,

I have a client running a custom arcpad 7.1.1.12 application whom at some point, wishes to upgrade to arcpad 10.

From a performance point of view, is arcpad 10 more per-formant then 7? I.e. does it have a lighter memory footprint? improve drawing perfromance? etc

Thanks in advance to anyone who is happy to share their experience 🙂

dan

There have been a few performance upgrades to ArcPad with the introduction of 10. The biggest of these was the decision to break out the StreetMap extension and allow it to run as it's own process on the mobile device. Any Windows based mobile OS imposes a limit of 32MB of virtual memory per process. So while the overall footprint is about the same, with StreetMap running as a separate process it frees up that memory for the core ArcPad application to use for the map. Other performance tweaks for 10 include:

- The time required to start redrawing a map (after panning or zooming) is significantly faster than in previous versions.

- The user can interrupt a map that is redrawing to continue to interact with it (e.g., zoom in further before the total map is redrawn).

- Less double drawing is apparent.

I suggest you download the evaluation and try it out yourself.

If you're running with older GPS hardware keep in mind that the ArcPad 10 documentation is now recommending 128 MB RAM. Although I can confirm that it will run on 64 MB units. (GeoXH 2005) I wasn't able to export a lot of data to the device without running into memory problems. Granted I was trying to stress the device...
