Renaming alias field does not display in table of contents or legend

Hi all,

I am having a bit of difficulty with arc map 10. Keep in mind I am no expert. I used to use it a lot in my early years of my PhD but I have had to jump back into it now I am finalising some chapters.

I am trying to rename a few layers and fields. It appears layers are no issue. I just go into properties and general and rename the layer. However, I have had issues renaming fields. I go into properties and fields and choose the relevant field I wish to rename. I then rename the alias category. The new name i put under alias shows up on the attribute table and also in symbology but the layer table of contents still has the old field name, as does the legend when I switch to data view to export a map. Does anyone know how to change the field name so it updates? I don’t want to have to import everything again from scratch.

You're only changing the field display in the 'layer' rather than the data itself. You need to change the field aliases in Catalog or the Catalog pane if you want the new field aliases reflected in a data export.
It also seems like you haven't refreshed the symbology to show the new field alias.
