Can't reset default value

Hi,

I'm working in ArcMap 10.8.1 with an SDE in SQL Server 2016.

For a field in a feature class I set a default value that also appeared in a domain for the field.

Subsequently the default value was no longer relevant and I removed it as default value and I removed it from the domain. I can't remember in which order I performed these two steps.

The Fields tab in the Properties window shows no default value for the field (see 'No default value defined.png' attached) but when I create a new feature, the original default value is filled in for the attribute value (see 'Default value added regardless.png' attached). This happens irrespective of whether I keep the domain on the field or remove the domain from the field.

Some vestige of the default value has remained in the SDE tables (the ones in the sde schema) but the front end no longer knows about this.

Can anyone suggest a solution other than deleting the field and recreating it? Doing so will create lots of work for me.
