Hi, Could you please tell which types of file you're added in arcmap? Vector/Raster/Dem/shp file??

Programmatically or just via GUI?

In ArcMap right-click-> properties (or double click) on a layer, go to 'Source' tab and the 'Data Type' is listed.

A normal DEM is no different to a raster.
