Printing from ArcMap has black symbols

Hi all,

I've been trying to print from arcmap to hardcopy's/pdf's - anything that doesn't distort the symbols in the legend AND in layout view. I've struggled with this before and adjusted dpi, ms pdf, tiff - nothing seems to work.

I thought there might be some tips in this group. I've attached a screenshot.

I did notice that it's only 3-D symbology that is in Layout view. The plot thickens...
