topic CACHED MAP SERVICE in ArcGIS Viewer for Flex Questions

Hi, I am using a cached map service for a MXD. I created the cache locally for different scales with ArcGIS server 10 and have it present in the C:\arcgisserver\arcgiscache. I am using the same cache for display in my Flexviewer. Performance wise it is pretty fast. However, when I use the TOC widget to turn the layers off, it does not turn the layers off anymore. I believe since the map cache, at that scale contains all the layers and the flex now looks into the cache, it always turns has no idea when I uncheck the check box besides the layer. Is there a way I could turn the layers on off from the cache. Thank you.

You most likely generated a "Fused" map cache. This essentially lumps all of the layers into a single layer of tiled images. It is possible to create a "Multi-layer" map cache to manage layers separate from one another, but this will affect performance. To adjust these settings, under the Caching tab in Service Properties, click Advanced Options. More information regarding caching options can be found at the link below:

http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisserver/10.0/help/arcgis_server_dotnet_help/0093/00930000006r000000.htm

Additional note:

It may be useful to separate layers that you would like cached from layers you would like to control individually into separate map services. This will allow you to continue using the "Fused" map cache with its better performance while allowing you to turn layers on and off in a separate dynamic map service.
