You need to determine which code you deleted from the domain and re-add the original code and description to the domain before you can reassign it.

Hi folks,

I’m facing a confusing behavior while working with a local Utility Network (File Geodatabase) in ArcGIS Pro, and I wanted to check if anyone has seen the same.

Scenario

I created:

A new Asset Group (Subtype) = Subtype_Test

Two new Asset Types (coded value domains – Short Integer)

Then:

Assigned the Asset Type to the Asset Group → Save > ✅ Success

But:

When I try to switch to the second Asset Type, I get:

ERROR 004049: Unable to modify domain, one or more asset types have been deleted
AssetGroup(155,SubtypeTest),AssetType(2,tew)

Notes

Both Asset Types are newly created

They are not assigned to any other Asset Group

No additional configuration steps were done (no rules, no topology changes, etc.)

The issue happens immediately after initial assignment

A colleague tested the same workflow:

Different machine

Different ArcGIS Pro version

Different Domain Network (Water) and mine is Electric.
→ Same issue reproduced

Also, I’ve reviewed the following source, but it doesn’t provide clear guidance or a practical solution to the issue.

ArcGIS Pro 3.6 & ArcGIS Pro 3.2

In ArcGIS Pro 3.6 and earlier, once you have assigned a domain to an asset group, you cannot remove any of the codes or descriptions associated with it. If you unassign the domain then assign a different domain to the asset group that has different codes/descriptions, you will get this error.

Hello Robert, thanks for reply

Unfortunately, this doesn’t appear to be related to the Pro version. I’ve tested the same scenario on version 3.4 and encountered the exact same error.

Also, if you review the link I mentioned in my post, you’ll see that Esri lists this error for multiple versions—from 3.4 through 3.6 and I believe it likely affects earlier versions as well.

We are saying the same thing, so I'll try my response in a different way. You cannot remove any asset groups or asset types from the utility network. This means that if you unassign a domain then assign a different domain and any of the codes or descriptions are different, it will fail and you will get this message.

We do plan on allowing you to change descriptions of asset types/groups in later releases, but there is still not a timeline on adding support for removing codes.

Hello @RobertKrisher, thanks for the reply. I'd like to know the best way to fix this error now. Should the user simply reassign the original domain to resolve the issue, or is the problem more complex than that?
