Merge duplicate repeats and sum values

I am making a survey that has a repeat with a field to select a species from a select one and then enter the number observed. Sometimes users may see and enter the same species multiple times on a survey. Is there a way to merge the individual repeat entries and sum up the number observed? Thanks

No but you can check for dups. This gets asked a lot.

I do this for species list also.

Can also use javascript but it has important restrictions.

Thanks. I actually want to allow for duplicates, just combined them into one result that is reported somewhere.
