The existing data service is not compatible with the survey

I have created a survey and published it in order to create the associated Feature Service. However, after making some edits to the XLS used to create the Survey and attempting to republish I am told "The existing data service is not compatible with the survey" as a field length is too short. However:

I never edited this field so am confused why its changed length.
If I look at the FS URL it's the same length as shown in the schema preview and error message.
Even if I republish the survey (losing all data) then attempt to immediately republish again I get the same error.

Please can I ask for some advice on how to overcome this issue? My only solution presently is export data, republish, lose the FS and all data, append existing data to new FS and update the URLs of webmaps.

Hi Andrew,

Is the diameter question a select_one? Currently, Survey123 sizes the length of a select_one based on the maximum length of the choices present at time of publishing; this behavior will change with 2.7 to default to 255 characters. Unfortunately, you cannot directly adjust the length of a field; you can rename the question to cause a new field to be created.

OK - that makes sense as to why it broke. However, how come if I allow republishing - which really deletes the existing the FS and makes a new one - this new FS only has a field length of 4 also?

It shouldn't - the field should have the maximum length of the choices provided. As I mentioned, this is addressed in 2.7 - you might want to grab the beta and republish with it until it's released.

I have same problem. I published my Survy123 and it worked on my cellphone. On the PC though, it had problem with a phone number item. I delete the Survey from my account, remove the phone number mask and tried to publish it again, but it keeps showing me the error message above. I validate the Survey, removed it from all of my devices, logged out and logged in to my computer, non of the helped. does anyone have any suggestion for me?

This is the first error message that I get.

When I accept the " I Understand that the...", and hit Publish Survey button, I get another one

I just made a copy of the survey in my organization account and published it on my personal account

Problem solved! Just in case it helps other people who have same problem, I made another copy with a new name and published it on my organization ArcGIS online account.

That's great to hear this is changing. When might 2.7 become available?

I have multiple surveys with the same select_one question fields, but with different select_one options. I've tried using the submission_url to publish altered copies of the original survey, but unless the character lengths are defined to exactly the length of the longest character word from my original survey select_one list, the fields will not sync. Even if say my select_one length is 25, and in my new survey I change that field to text and set a character length of 50.

Have you re-published this survey before? I see that error when the survey iteminfo isn't cleared from your local drive. Survey still reads this file as a published survey. After you delete the survey contents and folder from your AGOL account, if you haven't already tried, go into your local/C drive survey folder and delete this file, then try to republish your survey. This file will be recreated when you republish.

Yes, I published it, then I removed the published files from my account and deleted the downloaded transcript in my devices which actually was used for collecting data. So, as you said correctly, the original files of the survey- including the TIMEINFO file, were still on drive C, because I didn't want to miss the survey. what I did to fix the problem was to make a copy of the survey under a new name, and published this new one and deleting the original Form 3 from my PC.

dailya‌ I am experiencing the same thing as dameli@asu.edu‌ - I created a whole new survey and feature service yet when I immediately attempt to republish I am presented with the same error as my original posting above. JTedrick-esristaff‌ indicated this is an issue fixed in v2.7 but I am using v2.7.68. Right now I am unable to overwrite existing surveys...:(

Andrew,

The other thing to check is that the bind::esri:fieldLength column has not been set for that field - that would be a manual override of the length. I just verified with 2.7.68 that select_ones are being set to 255 characters using the 'Appearance' Sample available via Survey123 Connect.

Possibly unrelated, possibly not, but ever since I went through the process described in the original posting - to have to manually replace my data - the "Append data" functionality is now gone...meaning I can't do it again. Meaning this is a bigger problem.

Hopefully you found a answer that worked for you by now. The method Dariush Ameli suggested should also work (create a copy w/ different name, then delete the original). I believe what James was referring to was the issue with esri field length being fixed in the next version.

Don't worry about deleting the file I suggested if you haven't tried to yet. You wont break anything. The ITEMINFO file will be recreated each time you publish or even open and save any change to your excel file. It needs to be deleted because it acts like a lock file to the original published survey in AGOL. When you have a revised survey ready to republish, after you delete the original and all its contents and folder in AGOL, load the new version locally in Survey123 Connect and login to your AGOL account. Hit the folder icon to the left to open the survey contents in windows explorer. Delete "ITEMINFO file" from that folder and close explorer. Back in Connect, try again to publish your survey.

I had to both make a brand new survey (from the the existing surveys XLSX) and clean out all values in bind::esri:fieldLength column before publishing this.

Now however I face the issue of how to get my existing records back into this new FS. As outlined below I am unable to "append" the existing records (which i downloaded into a GDB) as they contain attachments. Any ideas?

Append tool won't work if you have synchronization or editor tracking for created or updated features enabled. Make sure these are turned off in your feature layer settings.

Have you tried append tool in ArcMap desktop? Toolbox/Data Management/General/Append
