Using Survey123 with private Portal

Hi,

I'm looking at using Survey123 with our ArcGIS Enterprise (v10.6) subscription. We have a SQL Server database that we would like to use to store the data, rather than hosted feature layers. Our Portal is only available within our network, and I've been told that VPN on iPads is not an option. I was wondering how other organisations are using Survey123 with Enterprise inside their infrastructure? If we can't use Enterprise, we do have AGOL. Does anyone use AGOL instead and use the REST API to pull data into the database?

Any information would be much appreciated.

We have seen many users use ArcGIS Online to collect/host their data, and then download it to bring it inside their firewall.
